Instant Editorial: Beware of letting others drive your car

My dad taught me a simple rule years ago: Never let other people drive your car.

His point was to never allow anyone I didn’t trust to get behind the wheel of my vehicle, because I’d be the one paying the price if that person got into an accident.

Poor Michael Norman.

His ex-girlfriend Ashley East allegedly took his truck on a joyride drunk and with a suspended license. She’s accused of killing Army Sgt. Daniel Beougher and injuring his wife, Lauren, on Hancock Bridge Parkway.

Whether Norman knew she had the truck or not, it’s still his.

I support a bill that passed in the Florida Senate — proposed by St. James City Capt. John “GiddyUp” Bunch and championed by Sen. Burt Saunders, R-Naples — which would increase penalties for people who loan their cars to drivers with suspended licenses and get into a wreck.
