Florida already has 35 official state emblems, including the state soil (Myakka sand), beverage (orange juice), fiddle contest and air fair.

Now Sen. Burt Saunders, R-Naples, wants to add a 36th member to the list: the gopher tortoise.

Saunders has filed a bill (SB 1486) that would designate the gopher tortoise the state turtle.

The bill passed its first committee on Thursday unanimously.
